The Tomb of the Archer

CULTURE / HISTORY / ARCHAEOLOGY

The Tomb of the Archer is a small Etruscan burial site dating back to the mid-7th century BC, nestled in the green hills of San Casciano Val di Pesa.

It is located in San Colombiano in Collina, near Montefiridolfi. The path to reach it starts next to the church of San Colombiano in Collina and is indicated by signs.

Crossing beautiful olive groves, you can reach the tomb in about 10 minutes walking. The burial site consists of a single square chamber, made with huge blocks of alberese and sandstone. The unique covering of the tomb in the Volterra and Florence area was a pseudo-dome supported by a large central pillar, which unfortunately collapsed.

The name of the tomb comes from the Archer's Stele, found only partially inside the burial site and now exhibited at the Ghelli Museum in San Casciano Val di Pesa. The stele was probably placed on the top of the dome.

The entrance to the tomb is free.
