Necropolis of Poggino

CULTURE / HISTORY / ARCHAEOLOGY

A small necropolis immersed in the woods, along the road that connected in ancient times the cities of Vetulonia and Roselle to the magnificent Spina on the Adriatic Sea: this is the Etruscan Necropolis of Poggino, in Fonterutoli, in Castellina in Chianti.

The 5 tombs found, including four chamber tombs and one box tomb, can be freely visited during any season of the year. In the silence of the woods, it is possible to admire the remains dating back from the 6th century BC.

The visit of the necropolis can be completed by a visit of the Archaeological Museum of Castellina in Chianti, where part of the equipment returned from the tombs is located: among these, two Attic black-figure amphorae, Etruscan-Corinthian ointment jars, decorations and pieces of bronze and iron weapons.
