he Via Romea Sanese, an ancient route connecting Florence to Siena through the Chianti region, is one of the most beloved paths in Tuscany.
Not everyone knows, however, that this path is also a virtuous example of inclusiveness.
The historic itinerary, once traveled by pilgrims and voyagers, has been adapted to be accessible to people with mobility impairments, offering the possibility to people with limited mobility, including the elderly and children, to explore the territory independently.
Three are the accessible pathalready set up:
- the 1st is in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti and is about 3 km
- the 2nd is in San Donato in Poggio, in the municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, and is about 4.2 km
- the 3rd is at Quercegrossa, in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, and is about 5 km
3 more itineraries are currently being developed: two in the municipality of San Casciano Val di Pesa and one in Barberino Tavarnelle.

Individuals and associations located along the municipalities touched by the Via Romea Sanese can book for free the equipment.
The Via Romea Sanese Accessibile project aims to make the Tuscan route accessible to an increasing number of people, allowing them to travel the paths independently or, upon request, with the support of qualified personnel.
